Seminar by Prof. Ilya Vinnikov «The top-down strategy in deciphering the roles of microRNAs in the metabolic and neurodegenerative models»

MicroRNAs are important regulators of gene expression and neuronal functions. The growing field of RNA neurobiology dictates development and improvement of effective and reliable in vivo techniques to address the function of particular microRNAs within the brain. We have recently identified miR-103 as an important regulator of the arcuate hypothalamic nucleus-dependent control of energy homeostasis. In our other study, using a laser-assisted microdissection and qPCR profiling, we identified a predominant decrease of microRNA expression in aged dopaminergic neurons recapitulating the Dicer depletion in dopaminergic neurons from Parkinson’s disease patients. In this talk, I will discuss our original approaches of microRNA delivery, locomotor phenotyping, as well as our recent advances in delineating the roles of specific microRNAs in neurodegeneration and energy homeostasis.

Dr. Ilya Vinnikov’s lab has a strong interest in studying the role of distinct neuronal population-specific non-coding RNAs in chronic complex trait disorders. During his studies, Ilya Vinnikov performed his diploma thesis at the Laboratory of Biocatalysis in the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Moscow. After graduating from the Medical Faculty of the Moscow State University, Russia, in 2003, Dr. Vinnikov had earned his doctoral degree with a summa cum laude grade in 2008 at the Internal Medicine I department of the Heidelberg University. The following years he spent as a research fellow in the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) Heidelberg. Since 2016, he is a Tenure Track Associate Professor of the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Dr. Vinnikov’s publications appeared in Nature Medicine, Blood, the Journal of Neuroscience, Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, Cell Death and Disease and other journals.
