M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov Institute of bioorganic chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciencesvisited by a delegation of Korean scientists

June 22, 2015 M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov Institute of bioorganic chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences visited by a delegation of Korean scientists from the Korean-Russian Center for Scientific and Technical Cooperation KORUSTEC. Guests were given a excursion of the institute, after which they discussed with the staff IBCh prospects for further cooperation.

The delegation included the director of the center KORUSTEC Lim Sang Hyun and participants of the conference on the Korean-Russian cooperation in the field of science and technology, which took place on Jule 19-21 in the sanatorium "Pokrovskoe": Sung Goo Park, Park Chul Beung ( both - Functional Proteomics Research Center, Genome Institute, KRIBB, Daejeon), Bae Kwang Hee (Functional Genomics Research Center, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), Daejeon), Woo Eui Jeon (Dept. of Bio-Analytical Science University of Science and Technology, Daejeon), An Tae Seok (Kangwon National University, Chunchhon).

KOROSTEK delegation at the entrance of IBCh

On behalf of the Directorate of the Institute with a welcoming speech by the deputy director of the Institute, M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov Institute of bioorganic chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Laboratory of Biomolecular Modeling R.G. Efremov. He spoke about the history of the Korean scientists, as well as its structure and main directions of the scientific activity of the institute. After that, members of the delegation were given excursion of the institution. Korean scientists visited the Library, Science-Educational center of the Institute, a laboratory NMR spectroscopy department of structural biology, Innovative center "Technopark" and Department of perspective science planning. During the tour, Korean scientists have shown great interest in the scientific and educational activities of the Institute.

His impressions of the excursion shared Dr. Park Chul Beung: "I am delighted with what I saw. We were struck by the fact that the Institute is a wide range of scientific disciplines, and are specialists in various fields.  I admire activities of the administrative apparatus - the institute organized everything just fine, although it is a large and complex structure. A great impression on us, and scientific and educational center, we really liked the organization of the learning process, as well as the methods used.

Visit to the Science-Educational center

Especially moved by the fact that all employees of IBCh, with whom we met, taking the time to talk about their work and answer our questions - and because we understand that they are very busy people. I think a similar experience would be useful to adopt in my institute. And, of course, we will continue our cooperation with the M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry. Now we already have joint projects, and I am sure that with time there will be more. "

Indeed, some members of the delegation to conduct joint research with the staff of the Institute. For example, Dr. Woo Eui Jin participated in one of these projects, together with the staff of the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology. Researcher of this  laboratory A.A. Shulga tells about this project: "Our project is devoted to the study of bacterial CRISPR. It is used by microorganisms to fight with all sorts of infectious agents - viruses or alien DNA molecules. This system allows the bacteria to remember these infectious agents that would then effectively deal with them. Now this system is actively used by specialists in genetic engineering, because its use opens up fantastic possibilities. For example, CRISPR can recognize any gene sequences with high precision - comes to the fact that on the cell level, the system can communicate with only one specific site of a DNA molecule that allows for gene editing point.

Our project is aimed at the fact that this system be modified to impart various properties: we attach to it different sequences, which are called “tags”. And so these tags will be used for what would bring together proteins of different functionality. In our opinion, such a modification can significantly improve system performance.

What does it lead to? For example, it is possible to create cells that will in response to the increase or decrease in the oxygen concentration to start producing some hormone. So, as you can see, this modification CRISPR can be widely used - both in basic science and biotechnology.

Visit to the laboratory NMR spectroscopy

The idea of this study suggested our Korean colleagues, and we offered them the use our development. We will participate in the project at the stage of genetic engineering, and tags in the coupling step, and further stages of the study of the resulting complexes. Today we have with Dr. Wu has discussed in detail the course of future work, as well as issues related to the publications, patents and copyright protection. "

However, cooperation with the staff of Korean scientists and Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic scientists not be limited to this project. At the end of the visit the center's director KORUSTEC Lim Sang Hyun said that his colleagues will discuss the creation of new joint research projects with the researchers of IBCh who took part in the Russian-Korean Conference on Science and Technology, which took place in July this year in Khabarovsk. Dr. Lim sure, such cooperation will be very useful for scientists in both countries.
